The students of Government Day Secondary School New Bwari, constituents of the RHF Teacher Bank Project (TBP), recently concluded their second term examination. The above is an overall performance evaluation for the students first and second term examination to determine the students performance rate in Mathematics and English subjects, which are the subjects taught by the teacher fellows of the Teacher bank project.

At the beginning of the Project we had a total of 449 students, however only 410 out of the 449 students ended up taking the examinations. This is as a result of some students not being able to pay their PTA fees before the commencement of exams, this further resulted in some students not having recorded scores by the end of the term. In the course of routine mid term checks carried out by members of the programmes department, it was discovered that once the rainy season began some parents preferred to keep their children/wards at home to help out with farming, sometimes against their will. This also affects students’ consistency in school and in the long run their learning and grades in extension. This among a list of other challenges would be highlighted in the TBP final evaluation report that would be disseminated for public consumption.

The SS3 students were not captured in the analysis because of their external examinations (WAEC and NECO) which led to second term examination waiver; giving them more time to prepare for their external exams. Their evaluation would be based on the results of their external examinations once the results are out in September.

4. Students who passed English in the First term vs Second Term

There is however a slight increase in the number of students who passed English in the second term as opposed to their grades received in first term.

Students in JSS2 and SS2 have the most significant improvement in their performance in Mathematics. This implies that it may have a significant positive effect on their terminal examination, that is, the senior and junior WAEC, in the coming year.

6. Percentage increase in performance in English

Students in SS2 and JSS1 are seen to have the most significant improvement in their performance in English.
