The Maternal and Child Health Initiative (MCHI) is a strategic, community-based intervention of the Restored Heart Foundation, designed in response to Nigeria’s maternal and child health crisis. Nigeria accounts for nearly 20% of global maternal deaths, with rural and underserved communities carrying the greatest burden. In Plateau State, one of the six worst-affected states in the country, limited access to quality maternal healthcare continues to put women and children at significant risk. MCHI was developed to address this challenge by strengthening primary healthcare systems and improving access to safe maternal and child health services in hard-to-reach communities. The project is currently being implemented in Gassa and Chit Primary Health Centres in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, where gaps in healthcare are especially severe. In these communities, primary health facilities often lack basic delivery room equipment, face critical staff shortages, and are unable to run night shifts, forcing pregnant women in labour to travel long distances in search of care, often with devastating consequences. To address these gaps, MCHI supports health facilities through the provision of essential medical supplies and delivery room tools, the recruitment and deployment of trained frontline health workers, the distribution of delivery kits to pregnant women, and community-based health education and awareness campaigns. The project also facilitates Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) sessions for women and girls, delivers community sensitization in local dialects, and engages the Plateau State Ministry of Health and Primary Health Care Board to drive policy influence and strengthen long-term investment in rural maternal healthcare. Since implementation began, the project has already recorded measurable impact. Between October 2025 and March 2026, MCHI supported 436 pregnant women accessing care, recorded 53 deliveries, reached 52 children through child health services, and facilitated 2,029 general outpatient consultations across the two implementing facilities. The project also deployed 6 frontline health workers (4 Community Health Workers and 2 Nurses) to strengthen service delivery and improve access to care in both communities. In addition, MCHI engaged over 75 women and adolescent girls in a dedicated SRHR session focused on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health awareness, further expanding its impact beyond the facility level. Designed as a pilot model targeting 100–300 direct beneficiaries across the two communities, MCHI is intentionally structured for scalability and sustainability. Through strategic collaboration with government stakeholders and local communities, the project is building a replicable model that can be expanded to other Local Government Areas in Plateau State and, ultimately, to other underserved states across Nigeria. With the right collaboration and partnership, MCHI offers a practical, evidence-driven pathway to reducing preventable maternal and child deaths while strengthening rural primary healthcare systems where they are needed most.
The Teacher Bank Project (TBP) is transforming access to education in underserved communities by tackling one of Nigeria’s biggest education challenges: teacher shortage. Implemented by the Restored Heart Foundation, TBP has, over the last four years, reached over 5,000 students across six public schools in the FCT, Niger, and Nasarawa States by deploying qualified teachers to schools that need them most. Through strategic partnerships with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and trained community graduates, TBP deploys vetted Teacher Bank Fellows to schools, including GDSS New Bwari, Niger State, JSS Area 11, FCT, GSS Tudun Wada, Nasarawa State, JSS Gaube, Kuje -FCT and JSS Sabon Lugbe, FCT, helping to strengthen classroom learning and improve educational outcomes. Beyond teaching, the teacher bank fellows lead STEM, literacy, and environmental clubs, mentor students, and contribute meaningfully to school life and community development. One of TBP’s most significant milestones is at GDSS New Bwari, the pioneer implementing school of the project, where students can now sit for their WAEC examinations within their own school, a breakthrough made possible by sustained teacher support through the project. Building on four years of impact, TBP secured funding from the African Union Civic Tech Fund to develop the Teacher Bank App, a user-friendly digital platform that connects schools to qualified teachers, supports teacher professional development, and enables schools to post subject-specific vacancies. The app is designed to bridge the gap between schools and educators while creating a more sustainable solution to the teacher shortage in Nigeria.
In a country where 1 in 5 people are affected by mental health conditions, and fewer than 200 psychiatrists are serving over 200 million people, the need for community-based mental health support has never been more urgent. The Mental Health First-Aider Fellowship by the Restored Heart Foundation was created to close that gap by training young people to become first responders, advocates, and community changemakers in mental health. Following an open call for application, the Fellowship received over 1,500 applications from across Nigeria, reflecting the growing demand for practical mental health leadership. After a competitive selection process, 25 fellows were chosen and trained through a structured learning experience focused on mental health awareness, support, advocacy, and project implementation. As part of the Fellowship, participants developed and submitted community change project proposals, with the top 3 proposals funded for implementation. These projects were successfully carried out in schools, hospitals, and communities across Abuja and Zaria, extending mental health conversations and support to people where they live, learn, and heal. Through this Fellowship, the Restored Heart Foundation is building a new generation of mental health first-aiders who are helping normalize conversations, reduce stigma, and improve access to support in Nigeria.
Across underserved communities in Abuja, Kuje, the Restored Heart Foundation is proud to partner with Tiko, an African nonprofit transforming adolescent health through technology, community trust, and access to stigma-free care. As a community-based partner, RHF deploys trained community mobilizers who work directly with Rafikas (vulnerable and out-of-school adolescent girls and young women), providing accurate sexual and reproductive health information, referrals, and support to access quality services through the Tiko App. Since June 2025, this partnership has delivered measurable impact: • 11,127 girls enrolled on the Tiko ecosystem • 21,329 health services accessed • Consistent month-on-month referrals and uptake across multiple communities This means more girls are not only being reached, but they are actually accessing care. Through this partnership, RHF is helping to tackle the triple threat facing girls and young women: teenage pregnancy, HIV infection, and sexual and gender-based violence. By combining trusted community engagement with digital health access, the Tiko–RHF partnership is ensuring that vulnerable girls are seen, supported, and connected to the services they need to thrive. One girl reached is impact. Thousands reached is systems change.
The young historian competition is an annual inter-universities competition that aims to promote African history and inspire patriotism amongst young people in Africa; the programme is meant to revive Nigerian history in the minds of youths and young adults to foster a spirit of nationalism which in action promotes active citizenry.
